Adult Speech Therapy
Heidi Underwood MS CCC-SLP is providing evaluation and treatment of adults with speech language, swallowing, cognition, memory and thought organization, and/or voice disorders. Her therapy covers those who are challenged due to:
- Are you having trouble swallowing?
- Are you having problems with memory?
- Is your voice hoarse or weak?
- Are you having trouble producing speech?
Speech therapy may be able to help. Speech therapists can treat more than just difficulties with speech. Some of the problems we treat are swallowing, voice, memory, and speech production. These problems may be caused by the following:
- Huntington’s Disease
- Oral/throat/laryngeal cancer
- Traumatic Brain Injury
- Right Hemispheric Brain Injury
- Vocal Abuse and Misuse
- Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
Therapy can help in many ways, depending on the reason for your problems. Swallowing can be treated through a combination of strengthening exercises, adjustments in diet, and swallowing strategies. If you are having problems with memory, we can teach you strategies to help you compensate. We currently use a program called Brain Train. It has a variety of programs that focus on improving cognitive functioning which can include memory/recall, thought organization, problem solving, and processing.
